I believe stunt driving and vehicles in general were always going to be my pathway. From a young age, I was obsessed with taking things apart. The moment I got my drivers license I was never not behind the wheel. I spent my weekends inside or under a car.
After school I dove right into a mechanics course at my local tafe, and started work at a wreaking yard, where my friends would joke my spanner only went one way. But that job experience was invaluable, giving me the best foundation for a career around vehicles. Three years later I was offered an apprenticeship at a panel beaters. I jumped at the opportunity, now learning how to put those wreaks back together.
During those early years I was introduced to drift racing, joining the national drift racing series in New Zealand, D1NZ as a foundation member in 2003. Apprentice’s wage not withstanding, I drove my VL Holden Commodoore with a RB25 engine. Enough power to get a slide going, but would you believe it, I learnt to drift by throwing her into a corner, no hand break needed! After 3 years I upgraded to a VR Holden Clubsport V8, still biffing it into the slide, no hand break. No one taught me otherwise and I still can’t believe I made that work for so many years.
In 2008 I spotted an advertisement for drift racers to audition for a live stunt show at Movieworld Gold Coast Australia. Being in New Zealand, I had to practise the audition stunts on my own at my local skid pan U-Drive Sprint Cars Hasting, before heading over to the Gold Coast to try out. Sadly, I did not make the cut. But that was enough to ignite the flame for me, I was going to be a stunt driver, I had to make it happen.
Later that year I moved from Napier New Zealand to Brisbane Australia to pursue that dream.
I was a panel beater by day, and drifter by night, spending many a Friday night at Archerfield Drift Park in Brisbane. I was also lucky enough to get the opportunity to visit Tampa Florida, USA and undertake stunt driving lessons from Bobby Ore.
My second chance came in 2021, very rare auditions came up for the stunt show at Movieworld. April of that year I started as a full time stunt driver! Showtime FMX (SFMX) run the live stunt show at Village Roadshow Movieworld, on the Gold Coast Australia. SFMX have been operating at Movieworld since February 2014, launching the Hollywood Stunt Driver 2 show.
I was lucky enough to be driver trained by non other than V8 Supercar driver, stunt driver and driver trainer, Warren Luff.
I took up drifting in 2003, at the age of 22. Back then the New Zealand National Drift Series D1NZ, was pretty grass roots. Most of us competing were doing so in our road cars! The first track I ever drifted was Manfield Race Track in Fielding New Zealand. I was hooked.
I met some incredible people who are life long friends.
